Is Tourism Bad For The Environment?
Saturday, February 26th, 2011For many people an essential part of the joy of modern living is being able to easily travel the world to see its wonders at first hand or maybe just taking a vacation in the sun to escape the dreary winters in northern latitudes. How does an environmentally aware person reconcile the damage done to the environment by their carbon travel footprint? Are there any environmental benefits that travel can provide in return?
These are deep and profound questions and I suppose the ultra committed green environmentalist would perhaps shun travelling long distances for such hedonistic reasons as mere tourism. Personally I am concerned about the environment but heck, we pass this way but once and I enjoy seeing the sun in winter and I enjoy seeing foreign cultures at first hand as it broadens the mind. Admittedly this does leave me with feelings of guilt for overusing the planets resources for my personal pleasure. Noone ever said that being green was easy!
